The Power of Props- Design Course

The Power of Props is an ongoing 10-week design course I created alongside Digital Blacksmith School.

This course covers prop design for the games/film industry with a high 3D workflow in Blender, and you will work alongside a small group of other students on your own series of prop designs from the same world, pushing for the strongest end result possible.

There are 3 main components to the course:

1. LECTURES+DEMOS
Design principles, concise ideation and research, world-building, optimised workflows for 3D to 2D, as well as building a strong portfolio for a freelance career, self-branding and marketing.
New lectures are released weekly, so you can watch them anytime around your personal work/life schedule.

2. PROJECT ASSIGNMENT
Each week we will go through the steps of the workflow to take you from the very beginning- with ideation and sketching in 3D and 2D, onto creating fleshed out, detailed designs in 3D, setting up for render and overpaint.
A strong emphasis will be placed on bringing out each student’s unique strengths, and we will work together so that you can make an awesome project that speaks about you.

3. LIVE FEEDBACK
Every Saturday, we will have a live feedback call as a group. This will be in-depth with overpaints, extra reference and tailored advice so that you can keep improving on your assignments.
Grow together alongside your peers, and help each other grow into better artists.
Sessions are recorded so that you can watch it back later, and I am also available to give written feedback during the week for assignment WIPs, as well as after the course if you need a bit of extra time to finish up the work.

Jolene Hew Zhao Xuan
Did you enjoy the class? And why?
'I think all the videos were very informative and very clear about the process, so it's easy to just go back and watch again when needed. Feedbacks were also very straightforward.'

Which part of the class did you learn the most from?
'Learning about her process gave me a lot of courage to approach 3D from a concept artist POV. Definitely all the little tips and tricks help a lot in Blender with the level of patience and commitment she has for her work is something I want to learn from'

What did you enjoy about Kay being the Instructor?
'Learning about her workflow especially one from 3D to 2D fits really well to what I need in my own work. I think Kay is very friendly, easy to talk to. She tries to help everyone of us when all of us have different kind of struggles.'

Did you enjoy the class? And why?
'Yes, I love how this whole course is carried out cause it's very organized, and I can know what to do for every assignment, and if I drag some assignments, I can easily know which stage I should catch up to.
I heard from other people who said that the course was too expensive and was not that worth it. But for me it was worth it.'

Which part of the class did you learn the most from?
'I guess it might be the way I think or analyse a thing. I did also find myself ignorant after learning that there's actually many tricky ways in 3D, Kay showed me a whole new vision like 'wait what, you can do that?''

What did you enjoy about Kay being the Instructor?
'I really learn a lot from Kay, not only the art knowledge, but also her vision, experience and all others stuff. I mean it's definitely worth to learn from a professional artist who can give you valuable insight on your work.'
